Human Development Report 2025

"Without deliberate action, the benefits of AI could bypass marginalized communities, deepening existing inequalities." This is true. Many might argue, “But we are taking action.” The question then becomes: What kind of deliberate actions are we taking? Do these actions help us truly understand the needs of marginalized communities? Do they ensure their meaningful engagement as co-creators in shaping AI solutions? Frankly, I’m not seeing genuine co-creation initiatives. Then what would you do?

AI: How It Impacted My Life!

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought significant changes to my life, even though I had little knowledge about it. I have established the 90/10 rule in my daily practice, where AI, especially ChatGPT, supports me in various tasks. While I currently use the free version, I plan to upgrade to the premium version soon. My journey with AI has been transformative, improving my efficiency and learning capabilities. AI in My Work A few weeks ago, I was assigned to write a 65-page report on Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) localization. The challenge, I had only 12 days and very little information while managing multiple tasks. A professional writer of such reports mentioned that it would take at least 30 days. Before seeking solutions, we must first understand the current state of AI adoption and its impact on marginalized communities, particularly people with disabilities. Take Mahafuza, a 36-year-old woman from Rajshahi District, Bangladesh. She has a disability and participates in a Focus Group Discussion organized by UNDP Bangladesh in January 2025 to assess the country's AI readiness. When asked to describe AI in one word and express it through painting, she created a striking image. Can you guess what it represented? After she finished, I asked her to explain. She said, “AI is something dark. Although it’s technology, it doesn’t seem good to me—maybe even bad.” What do you think? Could AI widen the digital divide for marginalized communities? If so, what solutions are needed for underserved populations? The real challenge isn’t jus...
