Self-Development: Learning from Society and Impacting Society
Self-development is a continuous process that requires an entrepreneurial mindset. It is not a common practice, yet it is not difficult to achieve. Society presents various opportunities in different forms, and one does not need extensive preparation to embark on this journey. Unfortunately, our education system does not teach us how to develop an entrepreneurial mindset. However, success is possible if you set a goal, work hard, and remain strategic. It is not just about effort; you need contemporary skills to connect the dots and make a meaningful impact on your life.
Today, I want to share some of my learnings from society, particularly through social media, which often serves as a form of entertainment but can also be a valuable learning platform. This is not a list of tips but rather insights that I have followed in my informal learning process, which have significantly influenced my personal development.
Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Breaking out of one's comfort zone is easy to discuss in conversations or training sessions, but putting it into practice is much harder. For many, it remains impossible throughout their entire lives. During my long career with UNDP, I often spoke about this topic, yet I struggled to implement it fully. The reality is that I have only managed to make small changes to my comfort zone. So, what can be done?
One key lesson I have learned from social media is simple: if your current environment is not fostering growth, it's time to move on. Just as small trees struggle to grow under the shade of larger ones, you must create your own space to thrive. If necessary, leave your hometown and explore new places where you can learn and grow quickly.
Temporary Setbacks for Long-Term Success
Sometimes, stepping back is necessary to move forward. Just like a fast bowler takes a few steps back to gain momentum, you need patience and planning. Criticism is inevitable, but one day, the same critics will admire you. Remember, "Success is the best revenge."
In my career, I have sometimes chosen to take a low-profile approach in my performance. I have deliberately said, "Oh! I don’t know this. It would be great if I could learn from you." I have done this informally, particularly when dealing with key stakeholders in senior public sector positions. Being strategic in this approach has helped me significantly and positively impacted my performance.
Develop a Specific Skill
One of the most important lessons I have learned from my long career with UNDP, working across both public and private sectors, is the value of skill specialization. I was often given multiple responsibilities, and I never refused additional work. I believed that being a multitasker was a powerful skill. While this is partly true, it is not always beneficial.
I realized this when searching for new job opportunities. I had numerous skills but lacked deep expertise in a single area. This was an expensive lesson, as it affected my career progression. Recently, I have started freelancing, an area I initially knew little about. However, I am now applying my past learnings to avoid the same mistakes. In today’s world, a strong skill can be more valuable than a degree. While I have the opportunity to learn multiple freelancing skills, I am being cautious. My focus is on a few key areas, such as article writing and blogging, while also exploring SEO and data scraping.
Find a Mentor
A good mentor can significantly accelerate your journey to success. Following their guidance, reading relevant books, taking courses, and watching educational content can provide valuable insights. Learning from successful individuals can save you years of trial and error. A strong mentor not only helps you succeed but also ensures that your success is sustainable in the long run.
Surround Yourself with Productive People
Avoid negative-minded or lazy individuals. Surrounding yourself with hardworking, honest, and ambitious people will help you grow. In recent years, I have deliberately avoided people without a vision or a clear career plan. If you spend your free time with unmotivated individuals, their habits and mindset can negatively impact you, damaging your own growth and productivity.
Take Care of Your Health
A healthy body leads to a healthy mind. Regular exercise can transform your physical and mental well-being in just six months. Strength training builds endurance and confidence. I have been committed to a disciplined food habit, consuming less yet nutritious meals.
At 54, my blood sugar level is at 5.34, which is well within the healthy range. Interestingly, some of my friends, including family friends, often tell me, "Exercise and a good diet haven't changed your health; it's just your body structure. Even if you eat more and stop exercising, you’ll still be the same." Initially, I found this surprising, but now I have grown accustomed to such remarks. Regardless of what others say, maintaining a healthy lifestyle has been essential for my well-being.
Patience & Consistency
Success does not happen overnight; it requires patience and consistency. Small, daily improvements lead to long-term achievements. Setting short-term goals and working toward them step by step can make a significant difference.
Key Insights
Success is a journey, not an instant result. If you develop your skills, work hard, make smart decisions, and stay patient, success will eventually be within your reach!
