Iqbal Masih: A Beacon in the Fight Against Child Labor and His Lasting Impact on Society

Early Life and Bonded Labor Iqbal Masih was born on January 1, 1983, in Muridke, a small village near Lahore, Pakistan. He was born into a poor Christian family, where survival was a daily struggle. His father, Saif Masih, was a laborer, while his mother, Inayat Bibi, worked as a house cleaner. Unfortunately, his father abandoned the family soon after Iqbal was born, leaving his mother and older siblings to take care of the household. Like many impoverished families in Pakistan, Iqbal's family fell into the trap of bonded labor, a form of modern-day slavery. When Iqbal was just four years old, his father took a loan of 600 rupees (approximately $12 at the time) from a local carpet factory owner to pay for his eldest son’s wedding. In return, Iqbal was forced into bonded labor at the carpet factory, where he had to work long hours to "repay" the debt.
